The Hunt
Sometimes buying products for your hair can be very expensive! But it doesn’t always have to be so pricey, setting yourself a budget and sticking to it can help you find some great products and save some money too.
The Hair Advisor UK team challenged ourselves to find hair products that cater to Afro Hair on a budget. My challenge was to find as many hair products as possible for £10 for my 4c hair.
Now first of, research research research! Don’t be quick to buy the first product you see online or in-store always do a price comparison. I chose to do my shopping all online as I am more likely to find promo codes to use and it was easier to do price comparisons.
If you use Google chrome a good extension plug to download is ‘Amazon assistant’ this is a price comparison tool, so every time you go on a website it will automatically show you if you can get it cheaper on Amazon.
The three stores I decided to target were Boots, Superdrug and Lookfantastic. I chose them because I knew they stock brands or products that cater to Afro Hair and all regularly do 3 for 2 sales or have student discounts.
What’s great about Boots is that it allows you to search for products based on the category ‘afro and textured hair’ then you can filter down on price.
Now I have found all the products I needed. The next step was to compare sites and also take into consideration delivery charge!
Superdrug requires you to have a beauty card to get free delivery for over £10 because I have a boots card, opted for boots! I also have a student discount (Superdrug also does student discount). The total price was £10.88 then plus my 10% student discount brought it down to £9 which then allowed me to pay £1.50 for click and collect in-store bargain!
It only took 2 days for my products to come and now it was here it was time to test it out! Here is my verdict.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Smoothing Hair Food Coconut Shampoo For Curly Hair 350ml- £2.09
Pro: Great size giving the fact I paid half price and it smells heavenly like coconuts! And contains macadamia. It is meant to be vegan friendly too.
Cons: This shampoo is said to instantly nourish curly hair, it did the complete opposite for me! Given I have 4C natural hair that needs a lot of moisture, this shampoo really dried out my hair and did not make it easy to detangle. I would not purchase again.

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Deep Conditioning Protein Pack 60G- £3.60
Pro: You can get at least 3 uses from one packet which is great. Smells great and did help to add a bit of moisture back to my hair a
after the shampoo had stripped it.
Cons: Whilst it was moisturising my hair is very dry and needs a more intense hair masque. I think next time I would mix it with another conditioner.

Tresemmé Heat Defence Spray 60ml- £1.50
Pro: I love Tresremme heat spray and have been using it for years for my natural hair and wigs so it was great to see I can also buy it in travel size to carry with me. It does what it says on the bottle.
Con: No cons for me.
Rating: 5/5
ORS Olive Oil Smooth & Easy Edges Hair Gel 64g- £4.29
Pro: I was pleasantly surprised with this product, I didn’t have any expectations but it helped slick down my edges and was not dry or flaky at all.
Con: If it is a hot day, this will eventually sweat out, however, I like that it is easy to wash out and doesn’t leave residue in my hair. So if you want a stronger hold this is probably not for you.
