Black history month is here, and whilst many online streaming platforms highlight black lead films, it can be a bit tricky on where to start! Although we really do love all things hair we also find it important to highlight, praise and showcase amazing alternative of black talent!

1. When they see us (Netflix)
When They See Us is a 2019 American crime web television miniseries created, co-written, and directed by Ava DuVernay for Netflix. It is based on events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case and explores the lives and families of the five male suspects who were falsely accused then prosecuted on charges related to the rape and assault of a woman in Central Park, New York City. The film very much had the co-founders shedding a tear!

2. Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi. It is loosely based on the 2016 non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, covers the inspiring story about of a black female mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and worked at the National Aeronautics and (NASA) during the Space Race.

3. The Hate You Give (Netflix)
Starr Carter, an African-American teenager, faces pressure from various communities and tries to stand up for what is right after she witnesses the shooting of her best friend by the police.

4. The 13th
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation’s prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

5. The Pursuit Of Happiness
Chris Gardner takes up an unpaid internship in a brokerage firm after he loses his life’s earnings selling a product he invested in. His wife leaves him and he is left with the custody of his son.

6. Ray
Seven-year-old Ray goes blind after his brother’s tragic death. His mother inspires him to rise above his impairment and make a place for himself, while a piano gives a new direction to his life.

7. Sister Act 2
One of our personal favourites! After an earnest request by her old friends, Delores once again becomes Mary Clarence to teach music at the school. She must also save the school from closing down and fend off a few adamant monks. If you’re familiar with the singer Lauryn Hill this film is the one for you!
